Spam Control
First you need to understand the two stage filtering process used for spam filtering. Here is a diagram to illustrate how spam is filtered.
As
you can see Spam control is divided into two parts:
1,
SpamAssassin marks all incoming emails and discards obvious spam
2,
BoxTrapper traps the “could-be-spam” emails which are
marked as less that the SpamAssassin reject threshold, but are still
rating as fairly likely to be spam
Here's how to control these two tools to effectively control incoming spam:
SpamAssasin
NOTE: Any changes made to SpamAssassin will affect all users with emails you host

Once inside the SpamAssassin page we can active SpamAssassin and set the threshold below which spam will be totally rejected (and deleted without any way of retrieving). A good starting value is 5.5. You can alter this at any time. Setting this lower will cut out more spam, while setting it higher will relax the settings allowing more spam through.

Exceptions to Spam filtering
You may now wish to add certain exceptions to this filtering rule. For example you may wish to allow emails from a newsletter you have subscribed to or a committee you belong to. Such exceptions are called “Whitelisted addresses”. If we want to “Blacklist” an address, that would mean we forbid any senders from that address sending to us. This is useful if you constantly receive unwanted emails from the same source.
To blacklist or whitelist address click on the “Configure SpamAssassin” button near the bottom of the page. At the bottom of the page you will see boxes to add Whitelist addresses.
You
can add a simple address like myfriend@isp.com.au
You can also
add addresses in various “wildcard” formats. NOTE: using
an * means: any name here. Eg:
*@mynewsletter.com – will
allow anyone with an email address ending with @mynewsletter.com to
send to you without SpamAssassin filtering their messages out
You
could also do: *@*.edu.au allowing any sender ending in .edu.au to
send to you without filtering
… don't be too silly here:
*@* would mean you have no filtering at all
REMEMBER: to press the “Save” button when you're finished

Blacklisting addresses works the same
way. However, you now need to add a number of times these senders
get to send to you before you block them. The default setting of 5
is pretty aggressive, you might like to start with 8-10. You can
always reduce this if you need to later.
REMEMBER: to press the
“Save” button when you're finished
BoxTrapper

Once
inside the BoxTrapper menu we can see the accounts that have
Boxtrapper enabled, and select manage to make changes. Unlike
SpamAssassin, BoxTrapper allows individual user changes.

Once inside you will see the option to enable or disable BoxTrapper for the chosen account

BoxTrapper general configuration
1, Select BoxTrapper configuration
from the Boxtrapper page
2, Ensure the email address is set for
the account you are enabling boxtrapper for
3, Add a name for
yourself (this can be anything, its just for you reference and may
appear on emails you allow to be delivered)
4, Set the number of
days you wish BoxTrapper to hold these trapped emails for before
deleting them
5, Set the threshold. In the example you will see
it is set to -2.5 which means that it will trap any emails scoring
2.5 below the SpamAssassin threshold (We suggested it to 5.5
SpamAssassin threshold above).
This would mean emails rating 0 -
2.4 would go straight through to your inbox
Emails rating 2.5 –
5.4 would be held by BoxTrapper for the set number of days for your
review
Emails rating 5.5 and above would be classed as Spam and
deleted by SpamAssassin

Blacklisting, Whitelisting, or setting up to ignore from a particular sender
1, From the BoxTrapper page select:
“Edit White/Black/Ignore Lists”
2, From the next
page, choose which list you wish to alter: Blacklist (Senders you
don't want anything from), Whitelist (Senders you want to get
through to you without any filtering) or ignore list
3, Then you
can add sender addresses similar to the ones in the example
list
Note: You need to add each new address on a seperate line,
and you need to us “/”between ever non-letter in the
email address
4, Press “Save”

Managing the held emails
1, Select Review Queue from the
BoxTrapper page
2, Find the date of the email you want to review
by clicking on the dates on the right and left of the page
3,
Tick the box next to the trapped email you wish to delete or
deliver
4, Choose “Delete” if you this its and
unwanted email (This may not blacklist this sender)
or choose
“Whitelist & Deliver” to send this mail through to
you inbox, and to whitelist this sender for next time
5, Click
Submit
