Info :: Using Search Engines

There is a wide variety of search engines available to us on the Internet. Often searching on the Internet is not as easy as you may think, so we compiled a list of tips and hints for effective searching.

What to Search For
It is best to have something specific in mind before starting a search. For example, instead of typing in 'Jerusalem', type in 'Jerusalem old city photos', if that is what you are interested in finding information about. Usually entering a broad topic will bring you back a wide range of pages which are mostly useless. Use more specific terms to narrow down your search.

Proper Nouns
When searching for a person, or a movie, it is often better to connect the two or more names of the title. For example, 'George Bush' would be typed in as :
George+Bush
This will ensure that you do not get back any result that you are not really looking for.

Exact Phrases
If you are searching for exact phrases, such as the title to a song, most search engines have a facility where you can insert the phrase in quotation marks. For example, '"six day war"' would search for the pages that contain that exact phrase.

Note also that most search engines are case sensitive. So if you type in 'Cedar', then only documents containing Cedar with a capital letter will be found by the search engine.
